Insurance looks at your roof by slope, or the left, right, front and back roof elevations. After a hail storm and before assessing damage and writing you a repair or replacement check, the insurance field adjuster will mark hail on each elevation to determine if that elevation has enough significant damage to require full replacement. Other factors to consider for full replacement is access to damaged slopes, how much roof SF would need replacing if damaged roof installed attic vents and valley metal need replacing in addition to and potential foot traffic required for repair areas that would lessen the life of your roof if not considered for replacement in the initial assessment.

Most common roofing shingles are made of a black tar based composition and are designed to imitate wood shake shingles. These are referred to as shake like composition shingles. Thickness and weight directly affect lifespan.
Synthetic composition shingles are newer to the market and provide benefits of a more flexible substrate, leading to better exterior granular retention and impact resistance to hail.
Wood, granulated steel, concrete or designer clay tiles are also available and depending on the neighborhood can add to the overall value of your home. Ask your realtor if one of these new roofs can benefit you and your home value at resale.
